A Thousand Cuts: Understanding and Addressing Microaggressions

A commitment to inclusion begins with how staff members treat each other; it begins with how each person’s value is recognized within the organization.

This session will cover the following topics:

  • Understanding how microaggressions may appear "harmless” or “unintentional” but cause actual harm to those experiencing them and are likely to corrode an employee’s sense of value over time.

  • Learning about the cultural and historical context for microaggressions, making it easier for learners to identify and prevent microaggressions in the future.

  • Identifying common microaggressions that often surface in workplace environments and when working with clients.

  • Participants will practice shifting their attention from intention to impact and will learn about inclusive language that avoids microaggressive impact.

  • Learners will master a cultural humility tool as an antidote to fragility and defensiveness, gaining tools for successfully acknowledging and responding to inevitable missteps.
