Seahorse Dads and Unicorn Moms: Transgender Fertility Considerations

It seems that every week, new data about transgender fertility comes out. As transgender language and community considerations continue to evolve, so do the medical realities of what is possible for fertility preservation, regaining fertility, and pregnancy.

This session is designed to educate learners about the ins and outs of transgender fertility considerations. This engaging session will provide evidence-based information designed to increase learners’ knowledge of the topic.

The following items will be covered in the session:

  • This session will begin by building a foundation of shared language. Using the Four Pillars of Identity, we’ll explore the core concepts that undergird LGBTQ+ identities, including assigned sex at birth, gender identity, gender expression, gender-neutral pronouns, non-binary identities, and much more.

  • Learners will get a strong grasp of non-binary identities in fertility, practicing a three-step tool to master the usage of gender-neutral language.

  • We will explore the data on how hormone replacement therapy (HRT) impacts ovulation and menstruation, spermatogenesis, and lactation.

  • Learners will delve into the unique barriers faced by transgender people when working to access fertility support structures, including an examination of trans experiences seeking medical care.

  • Lastly, we’ll lead participants through interactive activities designed to help participants master specific skills around trans inclusion. From gender-neutral language and asking for pronouns from members, to meaningfully recovering from inevitable missteps, this section will ensure that everyone leaves with tangible skills to help make a more inclusive and affirming space for your trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming patients and fellow staff.
