Gay and Grey: Supporting LGBTQ Elders

Our elders deserve our very best. Are they getting it?

If you’re providing support to seniors, you may wonder how to tailor your services for LGBTQ+ clients.

This session covers the following topics:

  • Participants will learn the basics of gender identity, with lots of time to answer questions about language and concepts along the way.

  • This session will cover the unique supports LGBTQ+ elders need from health care and supportive living systems, sometimes forcing seniors to go “back in the closet” in order to receive the services they need.

  • Learners will explore how and why homophobia and transphobia show up in supportive living systems.

  • This session will also address how to create structures that empower LGBTQ+ elders to age with grace.

  • Finally, we will look at ways to facilitate productive conversations about sexual orientation and gender identity in groups, providing concrete skills for leading dialogue even in situations in which not everyone agrees on what should be discussed in a public setting.
